How a bare waterfront lot became a finished, functional backyard — completed in two days by Precision Hardscape & Construction LLC.

Project completed by Precision Hardscape & Construction LLC — Coastal Carolina

“Some yards just need structure — the right beds, the right walkway, the right finish — and the whole thing comes together.”
That’s the approach Matt Jones and the team at Precision Hardscape & Construction brought to this waterfront backyard. Two days of work. A completely different yard.

1. Project Overview: A Waterfront Lot with an Unfinished Yard

Some backyards have everything going for them — a great setting, a beautiful view, plenty of space — but no landscaping to make the space feel finished or usable. That’s exactly the situation we walked into on this project.

The homeowners had a stunning waterfront lot with a peaceful pond view right out the back. But the yard between the home and the water was bare, unstructured, and not doing that view any justice. No defined beds, no walkway, no visual structure connecting the patio area to the back of the property.

🌿 Landscape Beds

Custom planting beds built on both sides of the backyard with defined edging and filled planting areas.

🪨 Gravel Walkway

Crushed stone walkway running along the side of the home, providing a clean defined path between the house and fence line.

🌱 Sod Installation

Fresh sod laid over the graded back slope, completing the transition from the home to the pond edge and locking the grade in place.

⛰️ Yard Grading

Fill dirt brought in and graded along the back edge to create a smooth, stable slope down toward the waterfront.

The result is a backyard that feels complete — structured, visually balanced, and ready to use. This is a two-day project that changed the entire character of the outdoor space.

2. Day One: Landscape Beds and Grading the Backyard

Day one was about getting the foundation right — the structural elements that everything else would build on.

Building the Landscape Beds

On both the left and right sides of the backyard, we built out defined landscape beds — giving the yard clear edges and dedicated planting zones that frame the central walkway and hold their shape through coastal weather. In the sandy soil common throughout Calabash, Shallotte, Sunset Beach, and Ocean Isle Beach, undefined yard edges erode quickly after heavy rain. Properly built and edged landscape beds prevent that erosion and keep the yard looking intentional season after season.

Grading the Back Slope

Along the back edge of the property — where the yard drops down toward the pond — we brought in additional fill dirt and graded the slope to create a smooth, even transition. This kind of grading work is critical on waterfront lots. A properly graded slope directs runoff away from the home’s foundation, reduces erosion at the water’s edge, and prevents the soft spots and washout that ungraded coastal yards develop over time.

By the end of day one, the structural work was complete. The beds were defined, the slope was graded clean, and the yard was ready for day two.

3. Day Two: Installing the Gravel Walkway

Once the beds and grading were locked in, we moved to the finishing centerpiece of the project — the gravel walkway.

Why Gravel Works So Well in Coastal Yards

Gravel walkways are one of the most popular installations across the coastal Carolinas. They’re practical, they look great, and they hold up in the kind of weather we see here — heavy summer rainfall, high humidity, and the occasional tropical storm that washes away lighter landscaping materials. Crushed stone drains exceptionally well, which means no mud, no puddles, and no deterioration after a heavy rain event.

Layout and Function

For this project, the walkway runs along the side of the house between the home and the fence line. It gives the homeowners a defined, low-maintenance path that connects the front of the property to the backyard — clean, practical, and easy to maintain year-round. The walkway ties the landscape beds on either side together and creates a sense of structure and balance in the space.

The result: instead of a muddy side yard that collects water and weeds, the homeowners now have a clean, finished path that handles whatever coastal Carolina weather throws at it — with zero ongoing maintenance headaches.

4. Sod Installation: Finishing the Grade and Locking It In

With the walkway complete and the beds set, the final step was sodding the back section of the yard to finish the grading work from day one.

More Than Aesthetics

Sod installation isn’t just about appearances — though it absolutely improves the overall look of the yard. In sandy coastal soil, fresh sod plays an important structural role. The root system holds the soil in place, reduces erosion, and gives the graded slope a much better chance of staying intact through heavy rain and storm events. Without plant cover, a freshly graded sandy slope will begin to erode almost immediately.

Coastal Soil Considerations

For homeowners in Little River, Longs, Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, and other coastal communities near ponds, lakes, or drainage features, this is especially relevant. Sandy soil without plant cover erodes fast — particularly on any kind of slope. A well-graded yard finished with sod keeps the slope stable, the yard looking clean, and the pond edge from becoming a muddy washout zone.

5. Why This Combination Works So Well in Coastal Carolina

It’s worth understanding why these three elements — landscape beds, a gravel walkway, and sod — work so well together, especially in a coastal environment like ours.

Each element solves a specific problem, and together they address the full picture:

  • Landscape beds define the edges, prevent erosion, and give plants a structured, permanent home that holds up through coastal weather.
  • The gravel walkway creates structure and a practical path while providing excellent drainage — no mud, no maintenance headaches, no weed buildup.
  • Sod ties the open lawn areas together, completes the graded slope, and locks the soil in place against wind, rain, and runoff.

Together, they turn a blank or underused backyard into something that looks finished and intentional — without a massive budget or a months-long project. This is exactly the kind of high-impact, efficiently executed work that Precision Hardscape & Construction delivers across Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Little River, and Longs.

The Precision Hardscape standard: every element of a project should look like it was always meant to be there — and like it was built to stay there. From the edge of a landscape bed to the grade of a back slope, the details define the outcome.

6. Coastal Carolina Landscaping Challenges — and How We Address Them

Homeowners in Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Little River, Calabash, Ocean Isle Beach, Sunset Beach, Shallotte, and Longs face a specific set of outdoor landscaping challenges. Understanding them is part of what Precision Hardscape & Construction brings to every project.

Sandy Soil and Erosion

Coastal Carolina’s sandy soil drains quickly but is unstable under load and on slopes. Landscaping installed without proper edging, grading, and ground cover will shift, erode, and wash away over time. Every element of this project was designed with that reality in mind — from the depth of the bed edging to the grade of the slope and the selection of sod to hold it all in place.

Heavy Rainfall and Drainage

The coastal Carolina region receives significant annual rainfall, often in concentrated heavy events. A yard without proper grading and drainage can develop standing water, foundation runoff issues, and erosion channels that get worse every storm season. The grading work on this project ensures water drains away from the home and toward the natural drainage point at the pond — not back toward the house or pooling in the middle of the yard.

Material Selection for Coastal Conditions

Crushed stone for the walkway was chosen specifically because it drains well in saturated coastal soil and doesn’t deteriorate under UV exposure or humidity. The sod variety and bed construction are both suited to the region’s climate — not generic choices that happen to be available, but materials selected for how they perform in this specific coastal environment.

7. Is a Backyard Transformation Right for Your Home?

If your backyard feels unfinished, bare, or just doesn’t reflect what you want from your outdoor space, a project like this may be closer to reality than you think.

We work with homeowners throughout Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Little River, Longs, Calabash, Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, and Shallotte to design and build outdoor spaces that are practical, attractive, and built to handle coastal conditions for the long term. Whether you’re starting with a single upgrade or planning a full backyard redesign, our team can walk you through your options and give you a clear plan from day one.

Projects like this one prove that you don’t need months on the calendar or an enormous budget to make a real difference.
